Summer Student (2016), Articling Student (2017/2018) (Business Law), Osgoode

The Gowling WLG Summer Program has not only provided me with strong foundational legal training, but also the opportunity to work on a wide range of files – from complex corporate transactions to my very own small claims court case – resulting in a very well-rounded summer experience.

My work involved both fast-paced deliverables and longer-term strategic thinking about business development. I was regularly made to feel a valuable member of the team and given a level of independence that instilled confidence. Gowling is full of exceptionally high-performing professionals from which to learn. At the same time, the firm provides an environment where students are very well supported to be successful. The informal mentorship relationships that develop are only paralleled by the careful selection of formal mentor pairings at the outset of the program. Ultimately, the summer experience is an intentional, well-tailored approach to ensuring a strong legal practice.   Gowling WLG has been everything I envisioned and more.

Summer Student (2016) (Advocacy), Articling Student (2017/2018) University of Toronto

When I was seeking a summer student position in Toronto, I had three main requirements: 1) Interesting, substantive legal work – not busy work; 2) An open-door atmosphere in which the professionals are friendly and eager to share their knowledge with students; and 3) A progressive workplace committed to equality. I followed my intuition about Gowling WLG when interviewing for a position, and my expectations have been surpassed in every way.  From the very first week of the summer, I have consistently received interesting, complex legal assignments in which I am actively contributing to the file in an important way. This has ranged from researching fine points in uncertain areas of the law and drafting opinions for clients, to attending court or participating in client meetings after which my opinion is sought and valued by the professional. Throughout the summer I have been pleasantly surprised to find that my opinions are respected, and that my work on every file matters to clients and to the firm.

Working as a student on Bay Street is incredibly demanding, but what makes it stress-free and enjoyable is the community – the students for support, and the professionals for learning and career development. Upon receiving every single assignment this summer, the assigning lawyer has taken the time to clearly explain the file and the legal questions at issue. This extra step is what makes working on every assignment fun, and it makes for an exceptional learning experience. When completing assignments, Gowling WLG’s lawyers are incredibly supportive and eager to answer any questions. My fellow students, also, have been a tremendous source of support and education. We all have diverse experiences and varied knowledge to contribute to the group, and we have a lot of fun together as well!

Finally, Gowling WLG is known for its dedication to progressive workplace culture. As soon as I interviewed with Karyn Bradley, and later worked with many impressive female lawyers, I understood that Gowling WLG’s reputation is not simply a PR headline – it is true. I simply could not work at a firm that did not have modern values, but I feel at home here and I can envision a future career here as well. I can definitely say that my fellow students agree.  Quite simply, the fascinating work and the wonderful atmosphere have made me confident that I absolutely picked the perfect firm at which to begin my career.

Summer Student (2015) (Intellectual Property), Articling Student (2017/2018) Western Law

I was initially attracted to Gowling WLG for its reputation as being one of Canada’s top intellectual property firms. My interaction with the people at the firm during the interview process solidified this interest. The professionals are approachable and supportive, and make you feel like you’re an important member of the team. The student group is diverse, collegial, and has been an incredible resource this summer – I feel that I have made some excellent friends here.   During my summer in the Intellectual Property group, I was exposed to not only a wide variety of practice areas within IP, but general litigation as well. I have had the opportunity to conduct a trial and mediation at Small Claims Court, prepare a statement of defense, attend a discovery, and get extensive client interaction. Within IP, I have drafted research memos, affidavits, and a factum for appeal to the Federal Court. I have conducted trademark and patent searches, gathered evidence for trademark infringement proceedings, and helped with a business development presentation which I later sat in on. The work has been interesting, diverse, and substantive. For all of these reasons, my summer experience at Gowling WLG has far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Gowling WLG to anyone, especially those interested in IP. I have gained an incredible amount of knowledge and experience over the short span of the summer and am excited to come back as an articling student next year!
